Nothing here is as instantly memorable as their early hits, but the songs are uniformly well-crafted and hook-laden, in particular the highly atmospheric "From a Moving Train," and the jangly "Wednesday Morning." There's next to no tinkering with the basic America sound here. In fact, unless you listen extremely hard, these could easily be outtakes from the '70s (the modern drum sound is the only giveaway).
Seven Songs from the 70S
George Jones is one of the last great honky-tonk country singers and a national treasure. His voice is smooth and supple, capable of joyous growls, romantic whispers, and dead-of-night despair. 14 GREATS is a collection of Jones' classics and pre-'70s country classics. No recording or copyright dates are provided, but these songs appear to date from the late '70s or the first half of the '80s. Though the classic honky-tonk style of the album is smoothed-over by a contemporary studio feel (strings, slick background choruses, etc.), the sheer power of Jones' voice is never diluted. 14 GREATS is a perfect blueprint of classic country singing.
Songs from the Hermetic Theatre
Classic down-home soul from one of the best and most versatile of singers of the genre (and, significantly, one of the few who was able to survive into the disco era without really changing his style). This nicely chosen anthology collects his hits through the early '70s, from his breakthrough 1964 "Hold What You've Got" (Tex sings only on the choruses; on the verses, he's essentially sermonizing, a trick that not only became a signature but got him tagged early on as a proto-rapper) to classics including the hilarious older-guy-romancing-younger-babe song "Buying a Book" and the gospel based "The Love You Save May Be Your Own)."

Songs from the White Hart
Full title: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Jimmy Cliff.Personnel include: Jimmy Cliff (vocals, guitar).Compilation Producers: Mike Ragogna; Dana G. Smart.Liner Note Author: Dave Thompson.Recording information: 1969 - 1983.Already an established star in Jamaica by the time of "Wonderful World, Beautiful People," his first international hit, Jimmy Cliff was, for many, the face of reggae in the years before the advent of Bob Marley. This volume of THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION series contains a well-chosen variety of songs from the singer's heyday in the late '60s and early '70s.Cliff's under-appreciated protest song, "Viet Nam," is here, as are a trio of better-known songs from the seminal reggae movie THE HARDER THEY COME, including his version of "You Can Get It If You Really Want," originally a hit for Desmond Dekker. "Bongo Man" is a percussion-heavy venture into Rasta territory (interestingly for a reggae singer, Cliff is a Muslim), while his version of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," produced by the songwriter, predated Stevens' own hit release. While it's by no means an exhaustive compilation, THE BEST OF... highlights both Cliff's songwriting abilities and his skill at spanning both reggae and pop worlds.
